Who We Are
At The Humanity Hub in Woodstock, Cape Town, we help people move from life on the street to independence, through the CAST programme. Est. 2014.
Our mission
Every person deserves dignity, and with the right support, anyone can rebuild their future. That belief drives everything we do - from a first conversation on the street to a first pay cheque.

How we began
In June 2014, Kerry Hoffman spent a day sharing soup and sandwiches with people living on the street.
That relaxed social gathering - and the regular monthly events that followed for the next five years - helped us understand the complexity of homelessness and the inadequacies of existing interventions. Those early years cemented Souper Troopers in the social capital of the streets, and taught us that every person has their own story and needs individualised support to move forward.
Kerry still leads Souper Troopers today - meet the team.
How we work
Everything rests on dignity, love and respect. Every beneficiary is seen as human first - before being homeless - and three principles hold that in place.
A hand up, not a handout
Support is offered to a person, not administered to a case.
Relationships, not transactions
We meet people where they are, and we keep showing up - which is what makes the harder conversations possible later.
No two journeys are the same
Each person's plan is built with them, around what they actually need.
The Humanity Hub
Our service centre at 66 Newmarket Street, Woodstock, is where all of this happens - a permanent address in a life where very little is permanent. Somewhere to be expected. Somewhere to come back to.
MoreLess about The Humanity Hub
Everything from a shower and a hot meal to counselling, ID documents, and job-readiness support runs out of The Humanity Hub. See what that support looks like on Our Work.

A business, not just an NPO
A selected number of individuals from our CAST programme earn a stipend through Souper Troopers' social enterprise - gaining real work experience, earning an income and building a pathway towards greater independence.
MoreLess about the Souper Squad
Products they work with - Troopers Coffee and African Worry Dolls™ - which is sold to the public through Shmiley (Pty) Ltd, our own social enterprise. The income creates the jobs and reduces our reliance on donor funding - so buying something from the shop is itself a way of supporting the work.
