Nine things worth bringing
- Non-perishable food
- Tinned and dry goods that keep - the Hub serves meals daily.
- Toiletries
- Soap, sanitary products, toothpaste.
- Clothing
- All seasons, and interview clothing especially: a first interview often turns on having something to wear to it.
- Linen and bedding
- Blankets, sheets and towels.
- Household goods
- Kitchenware, crockery, small furniture - the everyday things a home is built from.
- Materials for African Worry Dolls
- Shweshwe fabric offcuts especially, plus wool, stuffing, beads, cotton, thread, needles, scissors, old stockings, paperclips and pompoms - the Souper Squad makes the dolls from these, and every doll sold funds a wage.
- Stationery
- Used at the Hub and by people going through training.
- Cleaning products
- Everyday cleaning supplies.
- Electronics
- Including office electronics, furniture and supplies from a company refit.
One thing we would ask
It needs to be in good condition. Remember that it goes to the people we work with, and we don't like giving out things that are dirty or broken - it needs to be dignified. If you would not hand it to someone you knew, it is better not to send it.
Not sure whether something is useful? Ask - it is a quicker answer than a wasted trip.
Before you come
Where do I drop off donations in Cape Town?
At The Humanity Hub, 66 Newmarket Street, Woodstock, Cape Town, 7925. Please email first to arrange a time rather than arriving unannounced - the Hub is a working day centre, not a drop-in donation point, and arranging it means somebody is expecting you and free to help you unload.
When is The Humanity Hub open?
Mon–Thu 7:30am–3:30pm, Fri 7:30am–3pm. Closed at weekends. Drop-offs are arranged in advance by email rather than being a walk-in, so the hours are when a time can be arranged for, not an invitation to arrive.
Can you collect, or do I have to bring it?
For something large that you cannot move, ask - collection can sometimes be arranged, depending on what it is. Dropping it at the Hub is always preferred though, and not only for the logistics: it is how we get to meet the people who support us, and how you get to see the work your donation is going into.
Can I get a tax certificate for donated goods?
Yes. Souper Troopers is a registered Public Benefit Organisation and Section 18A certificates are available for donated goods as well as for money. Our accounts team issues them.
What happens to what I donate?
It goes into the work at The Humanity Hub in Woodstock - the meals served there, the people coming through the CAST programme, and, in the case of fabric and craft materials, the Souper Squad, who are paid to make the African Worry Dolls sold in the shop. If you would like to know where a particular donation ended up, ask us.
Can I donate money instead, or as well?
Yes. Money can be given by EFT, card, SnapScan, PayPal or a monthly debit order, and Section 18A certificates apply there too.
