Volunteer
What volunteers actually do here, how much time it takes, and how to arrange it.
Souper Troopers takes volunteers at The Humanity Hub in Woodstock, Cape Town. Individuals and groups are both welcome, and it can be a single morning or a regular arrangement.
Three ways people help
All three are things volunteers do here now, rather than a wish list.
Sorting and packing donations
Everything that arrives has to be gone through, checked and packed before it reaches anybody.
MoreLess - Sorting and packing donations
It is the least glamorous job here and the one that most directly decides whether a donation is any use.
Teaching a skill, or running a workshop
Volunteers teach the Souper Squad and the team something they know, or run a workshop.
MoreLess - Teaching a skill, or running a workshop
If you have a trade, a craft or a professional skill, this is the one that tends to be worth the most.
Helping on whatever is running
There is usually a project on. Practical help with the current one is always useful, and it is the easiest thing to slot into at short notice.
Before you get in touch
How can I volunteer with Souper Troopers?
Email us and say roughly what you would like to do and when you are free. Volunteering happens at The Humanity Hub in Woodstock, Cape Town, and it is arranged in advance rather than being a walk-in - the Hub is a working day centre, so somebody needs to be expecting you.
How much time do I need to give?
As much or as little as you have. It can be a one-off few hours helping sort donations, or a regular commitment - coming in often enough to teach a skill or see a project through. Both are useful and neither is treated as the proper version.
Can a group volunteer, or a company team?
Yes. Groups are welcome as well as individuals. If you are a company looking to spend a day of service somewhere it will be of real use, sorting and packing donations absorbs a group well. Tell us how many people and when, and we will say what would help most that week.
Can I share a skill instead of giving time?
That is one of the three things volunteers here actually do. Teaching the squad or the team a skill, or running a workshop, is a standing way to help, and it does not require you to be available regularly.
What if I cannot get to Woodstock?
Donated goods and money both go straight into the same work. Goods are dropped at the Hub by arrangement, and money can be given by EFT, card, SnapScan, PayPal or a monthly debit order, with Section 18A tax certificates available for both.
Ready when you are
Not sure what would be most useful? Say so - that is an easier question for us to answer than for you to guess.
